Ghent it is a fairly big city but after all very much contained. Like a small unexpected jewel planted in the green flat landscape of Belgium. The town is well preserved since very ancient times, the first century if you can imagine!, and has kept intact through Europe’s wars, many historic buildings, lifestyles of quiet and kind hardworking citizens speaking three languages! Bikes are more common almost than cars, or as common, everybody old or young owns and uses one, which makes the city traffic go a little crazy sometimes.
People in Ghent have quietly integrate modern times, that so many old buildings hide spectacular ultra modern designs. No fuss though, just simply switch to 2012!
After 4 days there, this Festival of Lights, in the streets of the city , where thousands follow a path of celebration, restaurants and cafes are so crowded but warm and cozy, was the perfect ending to my stay.
It starts here , the Lights telling the story over the Old Post Building..
finally going to bed, the Sandman is coming..
